Perceived availability of future care and psychological wellbeing among older Chinese
Abstract:
With population ageing and the one child policy in China, major questions are arising as to the challenges of new patterns of aged care support. This paper examines the relationship between Perceived availability of future care and psychological wellbeing among older Chinese aged 45 years and over using the China Health and Retirement Survey (CHARLS) 2013. Care support is measured by ‘Suppose that in the future, you needed help with basic daily activities like eating or dressing, do you have relatives or friends (besides your spouse/partner) who would be willing and able to help you over a long period of time?” Depressive mood is measured by the CES-D depression scale. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that uncertainty with regard to future care has an adverse impact on psychological well-being. Some older people without an anticipated caregiver face double jeopardy of uncertainty related to economic insecurity, disability, and living in a rural region.
